Laurel Volunteer Fire Department Awards

On October 12, 2024, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department celebrated their 122nd anniversary after being formed in 1902.


Four members received recognition for 50 years of service: Past Chief John McConnell, Past Chief Tommy Stanton, Fire Technician Michael Kirk, and Auxiliary President Rosa Maher. Each of the four members received a plaque, a resolution from the Maryland General Assembly, and a citation from the City of Laurel presented by Council President James Kole.


Many of the younger members received awards for Fire and EMS calls, along with recognition for hours served with department stand-bys and other events. Fire Technician Jay Bordwell received recognition for his 25 years of service with the LVFD. Past Chief James Codes Boat received the Fire Chiefs Award. Abby Castro received a Junior Firefighter/EMT Award and Corporate Secretary Michael Sellner received the President’s Award, along with a resolution from the Maryland General Assembly for his work both in the department as well as in the Laurel community.


The banquet was dedicated to Past Fire Chief and Past President Robert M. Coulson and Past President/Trustee Robert “Pop” Grant. Earlier this year “Pop” received a badge and the title of Senior Vice President Emeritus for his many years of service as Senior Vice President of the Fire Department. Attending the event (representing State Delegate Jocelyn Pena Melnick) was Edith Perry, who is the chief of staff of the 21st delegate’s office. Also attending were representatives from the Maryland State Firefighters Association the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, as well as members from the Laurel City Council. The event was emceed by the Honorable C. Phillip Nichols, Jr., also a member of the Fire Department. The event was held at the American Legion Post 60 located at No. 2 Main Street.


 

Michael Sellner is a member of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department and a life-long Laurelite.
