Powerhouse Gym Owner Wants to Help Neighbors Manage Their Health
A new business has arrived in the Corridor Marketplace shopping center. Powerhouse Gym opened its doors on February 5, in the former home of Total Wine. I recently spoke with Kelly Mattfeld, the gym’s owner. Kelly is a veteran and native Marylander whose basic training was in Chicago; ironically, upon completing basic training, she was stationed at Fort Meade.
When asked what inspired her to open a gym, Kelly said that her job as a Systems Engineer with the Department of Defense is stressful and that her parents passed away at a young age, prompting her to become more strategic about managing her health. In addition to holding a full-time job, she was a personal trainer for over seven years. Her goal is to assist others with their health pursuits. You can catch her exercising at the gym early each morning before work and then again upon her return to the gym after work.
Kelly said that her facility is unique because “my focus is to have more of a commercial feel, with something for everyone.” In addition to typical exercise equipment, Powerhouse Gym offers additional amenities such as a sauna and classes. Kelly plans to expand the business to include other health-related small business owners, such as a masseuse.
Blue Sunday Aims to Bring Upscale Dining to Maryland City Plaza
I’d driven past the “Coming Soon” sign announcing the Blue Sunday Restaurant in the Maryland City Plaza numerous times. Recently, I noticed that there was an open door, so I peeked inside and was pleasantly surprised. What I saw did not disappoint! It was beautiful, with a very upscale ambiance. According to one of the workers I spoke to, the restaurant should be open by the time you read this.
The Blue Sunday website states, “Throughout the years Blue Sunday has evolved tremendously, both in food and experience. We have earned our reputation by providing an excellent dining experience with vibrant customer service.” The restaurant seeks to provide a “culinary delight” of Asian American cuisine and an extensive bar selection. According to their website, visitors can look forward to an “elegant atmosphere and exquisite cuisine” on “the East side of Laurel.”
The Maryland City restaurant will join four other locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and in nearby Bowie.
Russett Library Announces Special Summer Events
The Maryland City at Russett library will participate in Anne Arundel County Public Library’s annual “Summer @ Your Library” initiative, which promotes connection and learning by encouraging everyone to read or get active during the summer. From June 1 to August 31, kids, teens, and adults can play games and attend events to win fabulous prizes along the way.
New this year is the Choose Your Own Adventure for teens. Read or do activities to earn points and win prizes. One lucky winner will win a Nintendo Switch Mario Kart bundle.
Kids can also participate in the Summer Quest. Print out the gameboard and collect points by reading daily to help Sneaks, an art-loving cat mascot, travel down the colorful trail to complete an artistic masterpiece called “Color Our World.” Along the way, participants can redeem coupons to win up to two special prizes.
Adults can partake in the Wild Card Bingo challenge and enter for a chance to win four airline tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines just by using their library.
